How healthy are you?

Spiritual health is just like any other sickness or disease, or the common cold. It can come back because our immune system is weakened. If we don’t remain in contact with our creator and have regular walks and talks with God, we can get sick again – Spiritually.  But how do we know if we are sick spiritually?  Is spiritual sickness something we can diagnose, something we can pick up on? How do we know if we are spiritually sick or spiritually healthy?

Hi, My name is Philip Stoneman and I’m a “ Worrier” Yes, a Worrier!  Not a warrior spelt with an “A”, but a worrier spelt with an “O”….Of course when I’m preaching, I try to act all calm, cool and collected- I’m Suave..James Bond Suave. Not! But, I worry – that’s my confession. Cant help it. I worry about what people think of the service, what they thought of the worship or the message, what they thought of what I’m wearing..and if I’m not careful, I worry about what people are going to say next in a conversation and what my reply will be.

I worry about stuff that’s going to happen next year, I worry about politics, the interest rate and who was picked for the springboks.

Of course my worrying is sometimes made worse by the fact that I can be a little absentminded at times.. yes true – I forget things, I forget where I put them and then I spend the next couple of hours trying to find my keys, remote, cell phone, wallet…I think there is a name for that – at school they used to say “ he is a space cadet” – that’s me… and being a space cadet at times, well increases my worry and anxiety..

So, I worry.

Now, my wife on the other hand..well she’s just perfect. She worries yes – but she is pragmatic.  She worries about the right stuff and she will respond appropriately and take action and sort it out.

Its why I love her and get so irritated with her at times, because I want to be the cool one – not her. I always tell the boys and my wife that I’m the absent minded genius professor, of course their reply is that you need to be a genius first!!!!

I suppose that’s the blessing of marriage – your partners gifts and abilities supplement yours, or they make up for your shortfalls..

I read this Facebook post recently ( And yes I liked it and shared it) that said there is no such thing as a perfect marriage – that there are going to be shortfalls and mistakes and fights, and arguments. It is a reality of life.

However, there was a perfect marriage – perfect people who were the perfect couple with the perfect life – they had the perfect marriage.

These two had it all! Their lives were perfect. He was romantic. Always bought her flowers Always said the right thing at the right time.

She loved him with all her heart, and responded so well to his romantic gestures. She never had a headache, They had the perfect life. They stayed in a perfect world. They were the poster couple for a perfect life.

Adam was cool calm and collected, Eve was beautiful, they never got sick, there was no anxiety or stress or “Worrying” – it was a perfect life.

Hollywood couldn’t have written a better script for their lives, but hey – God did!

Adam and Eve – Gods creation. Gods perfection.

God created them and they were perfect. And the world they lived in was perfect – Life was good!!!

Adam would wake up in the morning, have fruit salad and oats for breakfast – he wouldn’t even have to sit in traffic for it. He would pick a mango here, some grapes, an orange, pear and pineapple and there we go – Eve would cook up a mid morning brunch for him a few eggs, not sure about the bacon, some tomatoes, and off they would go to work in the garden of Eden-

Adam naming the animals and managing the wildlife and veggie garden, he was Gods ruler here on earth. Can you picture this perfect life they had?

In the cool of the day, Adam and Eve would take this walk with God and God would walk with them and chat about what their day was like… and Adam would be like –
“Yahweh – God, I’ve got an idea for an animal, why don’t you… “ok, I don’t know if they did that – but you get the picture don’t you?

LIFE WAS PERFECT. LIFE WAS GOOD. And then it all changed.

All it took was the fruit from the tree of life, a serpent , and with one little bite, and then ego and pride crept in, ambition to know all things and become like God and it all fell to pieces.

SIN came into the World, and people were no longer Spiritually Healthy.

And late that afternoon, when God came down for their regular walk and to chat – Adam is nowhere to be found.

Adam – where are you ?

“Adam…Adam..”

And Adam replies, hiding behind a tree – “I’m hiding, LORD because I’m naked.. And in that one moment – God knows and Adam knows – it wont be the same again.

And their punishment is banishment from the Garden of Eden. They are kicked out. God sends a bouncer Angel and prevents them from entering Eden – and their perfect life is no longer perfect. There is pain, and hurt and headaches and injury and danger and anger and the rest, as they say – is History.

But the greatest pain – the greatest loss, was the connection that Adam and Eve had with God during those late afternoon walks was broken!

Imagine, you have a deep meaningful friendship and it just ends – suddenly. No more chats, no more whattsapps your FB friendship deleted. You know you have messed up and you are sorry, but still – its over.

And that’s where we find ourselves today in our lives, living in a world that is dangerous, unkind at times there is disease, and sickness, there is stress and anxiety and worry and yes there is the opposite of the bad stuff as well, there is good stuff, the beauty of creation, the beauty of romance..

But no more late afternoon walks with God. And the greater loss than sickness and the bad things of this world, is the sickness of the soul. Sickness of the soul. Being disconnected from God. And I can imagine that worse than being kicked out of Eden was in  not having those late afternoon walk and talks with the Almighty Himself.

Sickness of the Soul –

As much as Adam and Eve may have been upset with being disconnected from God, it was harder for God. Harder because God missed those walks so much – but He had a plan.

And we know that plan – we spoke about that plan over Christmas – His Son, Jesus Christ coming to this earth to walk with man once again, and then to offer up His life as the ultimate sacrifice – medicine for the soul.

And so man and woman got well again in their souls- through believing in Jesus and following Him, they had spiritual health.

But spiritual health is just like any other sickness or disease, or the common cold. It can come back because our immune system is weakened by Sin. And if we don’t remain in contact with our creator and have regular walks and talks with God, we can get sick again – Spiritually.  But how do we know if we are sick spiritually?

Is spiritual sickness something we can diagnose, something we can pick up on? How do we know if we are spiritually sick or spiritually healthy?

Last week we started with the Sermon Series “ A simple Blessing” a Prayer that we can pray over the people around us, its even a prayer we can pray for ourselves.

The prayer goes like this:

May the Holy Spirit make you healthy

and strong in body, mind, and spirit

to move in faith and expectancy.

May God’s angels be with you to

protect and keep you.

A prayer that prays for health, in body mind and spirit – But its no good praying for a healthy body with low cholesterol if we are chumping it down at the Spur every second day. Good Spiritual Health comes from us taking the initiative too – we have to put in a bit of an effort as well.

So, whether you are in a good place spiritually – i.e. you are Truly Blessed, or if you are a “bit Toxic Spiritually, here are three easy steps to help you get back on the right track to being Spiritually Healthy

Step one:

Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how healthy you are –

Step two

Reach out to God through Praise and Worship, through Prayer & Fasting through meditating on Gods word and through Fellowship – Ask someone close to you to pray for you and maybe just to listen. Open up to them about the daily challenges you may be facing.

Now it sounds so easy, all you need to do is ask God and then speak to God about it ( prayer), read about it ( Gods word) and talk to someone about it (fellowship) but it is that simple.

The soul is the centre of all of you and all of who you are, and if your soul is not in a good place, your life and you behaviour will reflect that. The more I spend in Gods presence praying and reading His word and in “deeply devoted” fellowship, the less anxious I am. My life and my behaviour reflects more of who God wants me to be and created me to be, and less “brokenness”.  Spend some time this week praying this prayer of blessing as a prayer to God and even over the people around you and see the difference God will make in your life.

Lets Pray that Prayer of Blessing –

A Prayer of Blessing

In the name of Jesus Christ,

I bless you with the promises of God,

which are “yes” and “amen.”

May the Holy Spirit make you healthy

and strong in body, mind, and spirit

to move in faith and expectancy.

May God’s angels be with you to

protect and keep you.

Be blessed with supernatural strength

to turn your eyes from

foolish, worthless, and evil things, and to shut out

the demeaning and the negative.

Instead may you behold the beauty of things

that God has planned for you

as you obey his Word.

May God bless your ears to hear the lovely,

the uplifting, and the encouraging.

May your mind be strong, disciplined,

balanced, and faith-filled

May your feet walk in holiness and

your steps be ordered by the Lord.

May your hands be tender and helping,

blessing those in need.

May your heart be humble and

receptive to one another

and to the things of God, not to the world.

God’s grace be upon your home,

that it may be a sanctuary of rest and renewal,

a haven of peace where sounds of joy

and laughter grace its walls

where love and unconditional acceptance

of one another is the constant rule.

May God give you the spiritual strength to

overcome the evil one

and avoid temptation.

May God’s grace be upon you to

fulfill your dreams and visions

May goodness and mercy follow you

all the days of your long life.

AMEN
